DEQX for DIY loudspeaker builders

The DEQX PDC-2.6 and 2.6P are the ultimate tools for do-it-yourself speaker designers because it
allows the best performance possible from any given design.

As a DIY speaker builder, you are in a position to either create a new DEQX-HD ‘active’ speaker configuration from scratch, or modify an existing speaker design by removing its old passive or
active crossovers and then correcting each driver’s time-domain performance, frequency-response,
dispersion and crossover distortion problems to a previously impossible degree.

For best results DEQX Calibrated™ technology should be implemented ‘actively’, to provide
DEQX-HD™ performance, where each driver has its own amplifier. In addition to its speaker and
room correction features, the PDC-2.6 processor and PDC-2.6P processor/pre-amp, provide up to
3-way linear-phase crossovers that can be used optionally to facilitate active designs and/or seamless
integration of mono or stereo subwoofer/s.

DEQX also provides detailed control over bass and its effects in your room, which is measured and
displayed, so that the correct compensation can be applied. This allows bass to be better partnered
to the room, which becomes a major aspect of the bass we hear in any event.

For example, two subs placed in the front corners of a room have improved efficiency and
consequently less distortion. These can be time-aligned to the main speakers that might typically
be about 4 feet (approx 4 milliseconds) in front of each sub toward the sweet spot in the room.
This arrangement allows a high crossover frequency to the main speaker (100Hz to about 250Hz)
and a more coherent bass wave-front compared with traditional floor-standing full-range speakers
where bass energy must also echo from rear and side walls.

In the above example, by removing much of the ‘full-range’ speakers bass responsibilities, you
significantly lighten the load on its amplifier, reducing it’s distortion, while simultaneously reducing
inter-modulation types of distortion of the speakers own bass/mid drivers.

Very significant improvements are virtually assured using the DEQX PDC-2.6, even if only to
integrate one or two subwoofers with passive speakers, but especially if the main speakers are
a two-way active configuration to provide DEQX-HD™ performance.

Time alignment between subs and the main speakers is incredibly important and an often
overlooked problem in many HI-FI and home-theatre environments. DEQX Calibrated™ technology
helps calculate the exact delay required for the main speaker (or subwoofer) to provide phase
coherent integration.

The degree of control that the PDC provides for speaker measurement, crossover and time
alignment has not previously been possible, even for professional studio monitor speakers.
As if that is not enough, the PDC-2.6 also provides room measurement and correction, additionally
the pre-amp version also provides 100-memory media correction, a three-band parametric
‘tone control’ that can be tailored to particular recordings, allowing you to set, store and recall
from the remote control.

Although implementing DEQX-HD requires more amplifiers, each ‘active’ amplifier can be chosen
for their ability to drive only several octaves excellently rather then the traditional ‘heroic’ amplifier
that is expected to drive ten octaves, at full power, faultlessly – a tall and/or expensive order.

The reality is that by going active the demands on each amplifier for an overall heroic outcome are
diluted across at least two or three frequency ranges of 3 to 5 octaves each. This offers the advantage
that amplifiers can be chosen on their merits, such as high power and good damping for bass, and
detailed resolution but at less power for mid and high frequencies.

Even if the same amplifier design is used for each frequency band, its performance is enhanced for
each, being generally less stressed due to its limited power-bandwidth load.
