DEQX measures the consistent ‘Impulse-response’ (timing-coherence and frequency-response) errors that all speakers introduce to a surprising degree due to their electro-mechanics. It then delays the signal slightly to allow ‘look-ahead’ so that slower frequencies can catch up with ‘on-time’ frequencies. At the same time it corrects the measured frequency-response errors. DEQX pioneered low-latency Impulse Response calibration/correction nearly 21-years ago.

Timing-coherence (phase-response, group-delay)

If we take 24/96 media as an HD-Audio reference for example, its phase (timing) response is accurate to within a few degrees of phase shift that can barely be measured in microseconds. By comparison speakers delay numerous frequency groups compared to others in the order of milli-seconds. In three milliseconds for example sound is traveling one metre. So if middle C is on time but A440 is delayed ‘half a metre’ then musicality isn’t what it could be! All DEQX models address this.

Frequency-response

From any media source then downstream through preamp’s and power amps all frequencies play within a fraction of a decibel to each other. Only when frequencies emerge from the speaker do their volumes vary by around 4dB (+/-2dB). This tonality distracts from the media bearing in mind that a 3dB change means a doubling or halving of amplifier power. DEQX reduces the more noticeable midrange coloration to within about 1dB.
